The difference between ‘an’ and ‘année’ can be tricky for foreigners as both words mean ‘year’ in English. Let’s explain the distinction “pour commencer l’année en beauté’, i.e. start the year in style!
In some cases, the two words are interchangeable :
Il partira de Londres l’an prochain / l’année prochaine. He’ll leave London next year.
L’an dernier, j’ai déménagé à Barcelone / L’année dernière, j’ai déménagé à Barcelone. Last year, I moved to Barcelona.
Ils ont passé deux ans / deux années au Mexique. They spent 2 years in Mexico.
You should use the word ‘an’ with numbers and express frequency:
To say your age : J’ai 18 ans. I am 18 years old.
To talk about a specific time :
Il y a 3 ans, j’habitais à Londres. 3 years ago, I lived in London.
Dans un an, je serai Présidente. In a year, I’ll be president.
J’habite à Lyon depuis 6 ans. I’ve been living in Lyon for 6 years.
With some expressions of frequency :
– once / twice / 3 times, etc.. : Une fois par an, je vais à Paris. Once a year, I go to Paris.
– tous : Tous les ans, je vais chez le dentiste. Every year, I go to the dentist.
You should use he word ‘année’ to talk about a period of time, an approximative duration, frequency, with adjectives :
To express a period / duration :
L’année 2020 a été longue. 2020 was a long year.
Dans l’année / en cours d’année, j’irai à Paris. In the year / During the year, I’ll go to Paris.
Cette année, je commence à jouer au tennis ! This year, I’m starting to play tennis!
To express an approximative quantity :
J’ai vécu quelques mois au Mexique. I lived in Mexico for a few months.
J’ai joué au handball pendant une dizaine d’années. I played handball for about 10 years.
J’adore la musique des années 80 ! I love music from the 80’s!
Marie vit au Mexique depuis de nombreuses années ! Marie has been living in Mexico for many years!
In a question :
Combien d’années as-tu travaillé comme ingénieur ? How many years have you worked as an engineer?
En quelle année es-tu née ? When were you born?
With an adjective :
Bonne année ! Happy new year !
1985, quelle belle année ! 1985, what a great year!
La troisième année, je suis partie. The third year, I left. (‘troisième’ is an ordinal adjective)
J’ai pris des cours de chinois toute l’année. I took Chinese lessons all year. (yes, ‘toute’ is an adjective here)
With ‘million’ / ‘billion’ :
Il y a un million d’années, nos ancêtres utilisaient le feu. A million years ago, our ancestors used fire.
La vie sur la terre a commencé il y a plus de 3 milliards d’années. life on earth began over 3 billion years ago.
Some fixed expressions :
On va pas y passer des années ! We’re not going to spend years there!
Tu fais quoi le Jour de l’An ? What are you doing for New Year Eve? (NB : le ‘Jour de l’An’ literally means New Year Day but French people also use the expression to refer to the party on the 31st of January. )
